Chapter 3 - San Francisco - Humble Abode?
Well, this was an apartment in the unassuming Ingleside neighborhood of San Francisco. As you can see, the only actual furniture we had was a table essentially. This was to enable our interviews to go smoothly. The chairs? We got that for free.
Here comes the best part. My friend used to call this piece of cloth our “couch”. It was hilarious. We would take turns to sit down (quite literally) on the couch to have our meals. It wasn’t even enough for two people to sit on.
I slept in the upper loft with no door, but I got the night sky view as I lay down on the floor. There was a nice little window projected into the sky. Every night, I would re-live the most cherished memory of my life - seeing the stars in death valley. I am kind of dumb and stoic that way. Again, nobody cares about that moment. It was probably only special for me because of several reasons. :)
We would mostly enter our apartment and not allow any of our neighbors to even have a glimpse. Not because we did not want to entertain them, but because we were so embarrassed at the condition we were living in. We weren’t looking for sympathizers either.
